Underbite and Overbite Correction
An overbite or under bite is a very common problem in dentistry. In fact, around half the population in the US is considered to have an overbite, which means that in a normal case, 3-5 mm is separating the front and bottom teeth when the mouth is closed. In extreme cases it can be much more than that. Overbites make up about 70% of the dental disorders in children and are usually handled with braces.
Underbites are less prevalent, with only 5 to 10% of the population having their bottom teeth in front of their lower teeth. This can occur from prolonged pacifier use, sucking of the thumb, or bad chewing habits as a child. It is also often genetic.
Though there are very few medical complications due to overbites or underbites, they can be a source of lack in self-confidence in Hollywood and Los Angeles in general. People with an underbite often have a more prominent lower jaw than normal, and overbites can make lips appear disproportionate, and chins that look sunken. They can also cause headaches overtime and the temporomandibular joint (the jaw joint often referred to as TMJ) may suffer extra stress, which can lead to damage and wear of the jawbone joint. Underbite or overbite correction can now be solved safely, and effectively without painful surgery with the use of techniques developed by Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, DDS and his revolutionary subfield of cosmetic dentistry, Anti-Aging Dentistry.
Overbite and Under bite Corrective Surgery
A candidate for underbite or overbite correction could expect a 2 to 3 year process starting with braces for up to 18 months before undergoing Orthognathic surgery to either move the upper jaw forward, aligning it with the lower jaw, or moving the lower jaw backwards to align it with the upper jaw. In more extreme cases both are employed. These surgeries require disconnecting the upper jaw from the skull, or cutting the lower jawbone to realign them, then using metal plates and/or screws for keeping the jaw in place. This kind of surgery can be very painful, and may even require additional orthodontic work after the 3-month healing period to ensure the bite is in the right place. Like with any surgery, one can expect possible complications similar to nausea, infection, or even permanent numbness of the face.
Some might consider using Invisalign to replace the braces portion of the process, but Invisalign cannot be combined with Orthognathic surgery and is only affective on mild cases. In many cases there is also additional work and healing needed after surgery to fix the shape or color of the teeth, because simply straightening them does not handle these problems. Often times, after this long and often painful process, patients will undergo recontouring, whitening or even veneers and crowns to achieve the desired look they initially sought.
Overbite and Underbite Correction Without Surgery
Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, DDS in Beverly Hills has worked on hundreds of underbite and overbite corrections, using techniques developed in Anti-Aging Dentistry and has successfully come up with an alternative to surgery. Utilizing premium porcelain veneers and crowns that are crafted by Master Technicians, Dr. Maddahi has perfected the art of giving his patients the smile they always wanted without years of painful Orthognatic surgery, braces, or Invisalign. He can reconstruct the bite to be much more comfortable and aesthetic, eliminating the need for additional work, and long healing periods.
To find out if you’re a candidate for Anti-Aging Dentistry’s solution to overbite correction or underbite correction without surgery, Dr. Maddahi would first need to take a mold of your teeth. Then, after carefully examining your case, he would work with his Master Technicians to create a wax mock-up of veneers and crowns on the mold he had taken. Once this wax mock-up is complete Dr. Maddahi carefully assesses if what he and his team have been able to fabricate will rectify the bite. If he is completely satisfied he will move forward with the process and the patient will be able to see exactly what their new smile will look like once the procedure is complete.
When Dr. Maddahi began these procedures, his intention was to eliminate the need for metal plates and screws, years of time, and pain so that patients could get the results they have always dreamed of as quickly as possible. With Anti-Aging Dentistry his patients can expect to have just that, with most underbite correction without surgery cases completed in 2 weeks.
